Soot Life Expectancy
Shining Global Spotlight on a Local Soot Problem
The Situation
Rivers State, Nigeria had been grappling with a severe air pollution crisis primarily caused by soot, for 8 years and counting. Despite numerous efforts by individuals and civil society groups, the government had been slow to address the problem. Something needed to be done to raise awareness, pretty fast.

Our Solution
We used data to shock Nigerians back to the reality of the situation in Port-Harcourt. We gathered air pollution data from 31 countries and then developed a unique formula for calculating a “Soot Life Expectancy” for anyone who’s ever spent time in Rivers State. We plugged this formula into a website and invited Nigerians to check their “Soot Life Expectancy”. This was further amplified on billboards, traditional and social media channels. The website was also programmed to automatically send petition letters to Nigerian lawmakers every time a visitor signs the petition.
