ENDEARING DStv TO AFRICANS THROUGH BANTER

The Situation

DStv, a leading pay-TV provider in Africa, faced a significant challenge when it lost the broadcasting rights for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This led to a wave of negative sentiment from Nigerian football fans on social media. However, at the last minute, they got the rights and needed to get fans back to their platform.

Our Solution

To turn the tide, we tapped into the cultural phenomenon of football banter and borrowed a leaf from the animal nicknames of various African football teams. Then, we used them to create banter materials for the games involving Nigeria’s Super Eagles. This became a fan favourite for football fans across Africa.
For the finals, we went all out creating a movie-style promo trailer, character cards and GIFs to generate more banter during the game. With the help of AI tools like Midjourney and Microsoft Bing, our dedicated team were collaborating real-time to create a constant stream of engaging material.
